Dental Inlays & Onlays

In case of moderate damage to your tooth, instead of fillings or full crown your dentist may recommend onlay or inlay. They are considered better alternatives to crown because they save more of the original tooth structure.

What are Inlays and Onlays?

They are indirect fillings or partial crowns which are fabricated in a dental laboratory and then bonded to the tooth.

Inlay is placed when the cusp of the tooth (top structure of the rear teeth) is involved by decay or fracture whereas onlays repair the biting surfaces of teeth when one or more cusps are involved.

Dental inlay is placed in the centre of the tooth whereas dental onlay is placed involving the inside and outer areas of the tooth.

They can be of various types of materials like gold or tooth coloured fillings like ceramic or composites.

Benefits:

  • Precise size and shape of the involved section of the tooth
  • Less contraction and accurate fit as compared to a filling
  • Low chances of failure
  • Increased strength and stability for chewing
  • Last longer
  • Helps to restore failed old filling
  • Saved healthy portion of damaged tooth

How would the procedure be like?

  1. The decayed and damaged portion of the tooth is removed with a drill and the tooth is prepared to help it to adhere to the dental material.
  2. An impression is taken and sent to a laboratory for fabrication of a customised inlay or onlay to make sure it fits correctly.
  3. A temporary material will be placed onto your teeth until the permanent one is received from the laboratory
  4. In a few days time, the temporary restoration will be replaced with a permanent one. It will be polished to ensure a comfortable bite.

Keypoints:

  • Inlays and Onlays are a durable option for a reliable long term solution.
  • Thye are indeed a good investment for your teeth since they will last you long.
  • They help to safeguard the strength and function of the tooth
  • They are a less aggressive treatment as compared to crowns. Chipped or cracked teeth that cannot be repaired by dental fillings may be recommended for onlays or inlays to avoid extensive procedures like dental crowns.

Dental Inlays and Onlays are a wonderful way to restore your smile.
