Tips for Denture Care

Your dentures need as much care as your teeth. Your gums are the foundation for your denture. Hence, any sores or irritation can make wearing dentures uncomfortable. So, not only do you have to maintain your false teeth but also keep your jaws healthy.

Follow these tips:

1. Gently brush your dentures daily with a soft bristled toothbrush and denture cleaner. Avoid hard bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
2. Give a quick rinse to your dentures after you eat to avoid trapping food, plaque and other deposits over them.
3. Handle your dentures carefully.
4. Soak your dentures in water or solution overnight. Avoid wearing them at night. This gives your gums a break from constant rubbing which can lead to sores and irritation.
5. Clean your mouth after removing the dentures.
6. Regularly massage your gums to stimulate blood flow and to reduce any irritation.
7. Regular visits to your dentist every few months will ensure that the denture is fitting well. Proper fit prevents slippage and discomfort.
8. See your dentist if the denture becomes loose. Loose dentures can cause irritation, sores and infection.

Once you obtain your new set of teeth you will initially feel awkward and will have difficulty

in chewing and speaking. Getting adjusted to your dentures requires patience and perseverance. You may take a few weeks to a month‘s time to get used to it. Regular follow up with your dentist is important during the adjustment phase.
