Tips for Dental Implant care

Dental implants are a routine treatment option for replacement of missing teeth. You play a significant role in the sucess of the implants and must be motivated to take care of them. If you already have dental implants or you are going for one, you need to remember these tips:

1. For their long term success restored dental implants should be kept clean. To effectively clean them use a soft bristled toothbrush and a low abrasive toothpaste.

2. It is important to floss under and around the implant crown to remove the tenacious biofilm.

3. Use interdental brushes or proxa brushes in hard-to-reach areas.

4. You can also use an oral irrigator or water flosser (easily available online) which uses a stream of high pressure pulsating water to remove plaque and food debris.

5. Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthrinse (Contact your dentist for it's use. It is not recommended at all times because of the side effects associated with it ex.staining of teeth)

6. Routine scaling is essential for long term success. Traditional dental scalers are made up of metal. They can scratch the crown or the implant surface. So, non-metal scalers are used which can thoroughly clean without causing damage.

7. Regular follow-ups are must to moniter the implants. Twice a year visits to the dentist play an important role in the prevention. The dentist will perform an oral examination, do routine scaling and get an X-ray done of the implant site. These regular visits will give an opportunity to your dentist to detect any problems in the early stage.

8. Be careful with hard and sticky foods. They have a tendency to get stuck between the teeth and are responsible for wear and tear.

Dental implants if not taken care of could develop problems. The earliest sign of the problem is bleeding. It is referred to as peri-implant mucositis. If not treated, it may progress to bone loss around the implant and is referred to as peri-implantitis. This would lead to failure of the implant.

Despite these challenges, the success rate of dental implants is high. Prevention of peri-implantitis is paramount to implant health, maintenance and function.
